Standard 2

7Sb.2: Compare the major indicators of plant and animal cells.

2- Lesson on Organelles of Plant and Animal Cells

Title-Compare and Contrast Plant and Animal Cells

       1)     The students will be shown a picture and given a copy of an animal (red blood cell) and plant cell (Sunflower leaf) comparing and contrasting the different “shapes” (organelles and structures of plant and animal cells)

       2)     The teacher will have the students get out the Microslides and view the different cells using the strip for the microslide, from Cork to Viruses, mainly comparing and contrasting while drawing picture of the plant and animal cells.

       3)     The students will share their results and peers edit each others lab drawings of plant and animal cells.

       4)     The teacher will then share her plant and animal cells drawings from the microslides, comparing and contrasting similar and different organelles

-Cell Structure

Class Demonstration

1) Do-Now- The students will be shown a picture and given a copy of an animal (red blood cell) and plant cell (Sunflower leaf) comparing and contrasting the shapes (organelles and structures of plant and animal cells)

2) The teacher will demonstrate how to draw the “cork cell” and label its parts……using the microslide and microslide strip.

Question 1
What are the 2 main differences between plant and animal cells?

-       Plant cells have a cell wall and chloroplasts while animal cells lack a cell wall and chloroplasts
Question 2
Explain why plant cells have to make their own food and have a cell wall to protect them?
-       Plant cells have to have a cell wall (cellulose)  to protect them because they are immobile and need extra protection while they must also have chloroplast  to make their own food because they can’t go and “hunt” it….(photosynthesis)
